Hungarian authorities set up the ghettos also in Veszprém in late May 1944. Two fenced off areas were designated in the town. One encompassed the synagogue and the surrounding area, the other was set up in a military camp. Jews were dragged from their houses to the ghettos with violent brutality. Hundreds of people were rounded up in only a few buildings and they were only allowed to leave the premises with a special permission. Windows facing the outside had to be whitewashed. Victims held captive in the Veszprém ghettos were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau on 29 June. Vast majority of them were murdered.
