Purim

Also called as the “Jewish Carnival”, Purim commemorates an event that took place 450?bc. According to the sages, Haman, the right hand man of King Achashverosh (aka Xerxes) of Persia planned to kill all the Jews of the empire. Esther, the king’s wife however intervened and prevented this from happening. The story is rendered in the Book of Esther, a scroll read in synagogues during Purim. The audience makes a big noise when the name Haman is mentioned. It is customary to send treats and small presents to friends, neighbors. The deliverance of the Jewish people is celebrated with dance balls and parties.
